What are prepositions, and what are the types in German grammar?

Prepositions (in German: Präpositionen) are words that mark relations and connections between persons and things; therefore, they are also called Verhältniswörter in German grammar. They belong to the group of particles and are not inflectable. Prepositions are neither constituents of a sentence nor grammatical modifiers (attributes), but they are always part of them. They invariably refer to a noun or a personal pronoun.

The following types of prepositions show a general distinction:

  • Local prepositions, showing spatial relations:
    • Example words:
      • auf, aus, außer, durch, hinter, in, vor, südlich, nördlich, unweit, zwischen, unterhalb, abseits, jenseits, längs, neben, über, inmitten, entlang, bis, außerhalb, an, innerhalb
    • Example sentences:
      • „Der Baum steht neben dem Haus.“ (The tree stands beside the house.)
      • „Außerhalb der Stadt gibt es nicht viel Verkehr.“ (Outside the town, there is not much traffic.)
  • Temporal prepositions, related to time:
    • Example words:
      • gegen, mit, von, vor, ab, an, auf, binnen, während, zwischen, zeit, seit, für
    • Example sentences:
      • „Gegen 18 Uhr spielen wir Fußball.“ (We’re playing football at around 6 o’clock.)
      • „Wir essen zwischen eins und zwei.“ (We eat between one and two.)
      • „Binnen drei Stunden muss die Arbeit fertig sein.“ (Within three hours, the work must be finished.)
  • Modal prepositions, stating the manner:
    • Example words:
      • ausschließlich, wie, außer, entgegen, mit, ohne, gegen, auf, statt, aus, unter, wider, samt, laut, inklusive, nebst, statt
    • Example sentences:
      • „Der Tisch ist aus Holz.“ (The table is made of wood.)
      • „Entgegen aller Erwartungen tat er es.“ (Against all expectations, he did it.)
      • „Mit etwas mehr Mut wirst du es schon schaffen.“ (With a little more courage, you’ll surely manage to do it.)
  • Causal prepositions, demonstrating the cause or instrument etc.:
    • Example words:
      • wegen, zwecks, trotz, ungeachtet, gemäß, bei, aufgrund, anlässlich, mangels, angesichts, unter, kraft, seitens, von, über, infolge, bezüglich
    • Example sentences:
      • „Das Geschäft bleibt wegen Krankheit geschlossen.“ (The shop remains closed due to illness.)
      • „Gemäß den neuen Richtlinien sind nur noch zwei Gepäckstücke erlaubt.“ (According to the new guidelines, only two pieces of luggage are allowed.)
      • „Trotz der Bedenken hat es geklappt.“ (Despite the concerns, it has worked out.)
