Exercise 3: second conditional (if clause type 3)

(Practise and test your skills in using conditional clauses)

Second conditional (if clause type 2) – cloze test (difficulty: 3 of 5 – medium)

Fill the gaps with the appropriate forms of the verbs in brackets so that a meaningful if sentence type 2 (second conditional) results. For this, you need either the past simple or the present conditional simple. Do not use any short or contracted forms for the gaps.

  • Example: “Mr Thompson ____ his car if he ____ the time.” (wash, have) → “Mr Thompson would wash his car if he had the time.”

You can check your results with the button below after you have finished. You may also use the hint button, but note that you will lose points for that. If you still require help with the topic, reread the explanation of the if clauses type 2.
